Fabinho: What Philippe Coutinho told me ahead of Liverpool FC move
The Liverpool FC summer signing opens up about Philippe Coutinho's review of the Anfield fanbase
Fabinho has revealed that Philippe Coutinho told his compatriot about Liverpool FC’s “exceptional” supporters ahead of his summer transfer.
The Reds signed the Brazilian midfielder in the 2018 summer transfer window to bolster Jurgen Klopp’s options in the middle of the park.
The 25-year-old has found his first-team opportunities limited in the current campaign as the German head coach looks to ease Fabinho into life at Liverpool FC.
Coutinho left Liverpool FC to move to FC Barcelona in the January transfer window in a £142m switch.
While Liverpool FC supporters were understandably disappointed with Coutinho’s decision to leave, the number 10 did play a role in Fabinho’s switch to Anfield.
Fabinho has shed light on Coutinho’s rave review of the Liverpool FC supporters and their ability to “make the difference” in games.
“I knew about Anfield on European nights, but it wasn’t a very detailed knowledge, just the kind of things you pick up from the TV about stories and games you’ve watched,” Fabinho told Liverpool FC’s website.
“I remember once with the national team, Philippe Coutinho was talking about the exceptional Liverpool fans. But now that I’m living it week in and week out, the atmosphere in the stadium, the reaction of the fans to every victory – you can see how fanatical the supporters are and how much they love their team. They really make a difference.
“At the start of the season when I wasn’t playing as much and I was on the bench, especially in the first game, I was looking around the stadium all the time at the way the fans were reacting and I was really impressed by it all.
“The first Champions League night against PSG was amazing. The fans put on a show at every home game and it gives us an extra push when we play at Anfield.”
Fabinho completed a £39m move to Liverpool FC from AS Monaco in the 2018 summer transfer window.
The former AS Monaco holding midfielder was a late substitute in a 3-2 win over Paris Saint-Germain to get his first taste of Anfield’s famous European nights.
The Brazilian midfielder made his Liverpool FC start in a 2-1 loss to Chelsea FC in the League Cup in September.
Fabinho’s full Champions League debut came in a 4-0 win over Red Star Belgrade at Anfield in the group stage.
The Brazilian got his first Premier League minutes under his belt in a 1-0 win at Huddersfield Town in October.
