The England international has managed to nail down a regular starting spot in the Liverpool FC team this season alongside the world’s most expensive centre-half, Van Dijk.
Gomez has been keeping World Cup finalist Dejan Lovren out of the Liverpool FC team with his composed performances at the back, highlighting his reading of the game and his excellent pace.
The 21-year-old has been a regular member of Gareth Southgate’s ever-improving England squad on the back of his excellent performances under Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp.
Given that Netherlands international Van Dijk is still only 27, the Liverpool FC pair have the potential to establish themselves as a long-term centre-half partnership in Klopp’s team.
Former Liverpool FC captain Barnes has been impressed with Gomez’s impact on the Reds team since his return from a serious knee problem.
“I’ve been impressed with Joe Gomez ever since he’s been at the club,” said Barnes, speaking exclusively to The Sport Review.
“What he needed was a leading figure beside him, which he now has with Virgil van Dijk. And of course the goalkeeper [Alisson] has helped to stabilise the defence.”
Liverpool FC signed Gomez in a £4.5m deal from Charlton Athletic in the 2015 summer transfer window under Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers.
Gomez made a bright start to his Liverpool FC career after starting their opening five games in the 2015-16 season at left-back.
However, the England international suffered a long-term knee problem a matter of days after Klopp’s appointment as Rodgers’ successor.
