The game looked to be heading to a goalless draw at Anfield as it entered into the sixth minute of stoppage time.
However, Origi netted a last-gasp winner in the 96th minute at Anfield after having come on as a substitute in the 84th minute.
The goal came after Virgil van Dijk’s skewed effort rebounded off the crossbar, and Belgian forward Origi pounced to fire home and send Anfield wild.
Speaking during Sky Sports‘ commentary of the game immediately after the winner, Carragher said: “This place has gone berserk!
“What was Jordan Pickford doing? It was a massive mistake from Pickford. You can’t do that at any time in a Merseyside derby.
“Everton don’t deserve that [to lose] but that does not matter a jot. A Merseyside derby is all about results – and it’s another victory for Liverpool.”
He continued: “There is no doubt he is a top goalkeeper but Pickford has his moments. Credit to Origi for not giving it up.
“Derby wins, last minute wins, there is nothing better. This is more than being about a derby win, it’s about keeping in touch with Manchester City.
Origi was an unlikely hero for Liverpool FC, with the Belgian striker having featured in the Premier League for the first time this season.
Indeed, the 23-year-old has not started a single game all season and he has only made a total of two appearances from the bench so far.
The win left Liverpool FC in second place in the Premier League table and two points behind leaders Manchester City after 14 games of the new campaign.
Liverpool FC will now turn their attentions towards their trip to Burnley in the Premier League on Wednesday night.
