The England defender has been in fine form for the Reds this season but he needed to come off in the 23rd minute during the Premier League clash on Wednesday night following a strong challenge.
The 21-year-old has been assessed by Liverpool FC medical staff in recent days and the Merseyside outfit have now confirmed that Gomez is likely to face a spell of around six weeks out of action, ruling him out of the hectic festive period in the Premier League.
A statement released on the Liverpool FC website read: “Gomez’s injury was further assessed by the Reds’ medical team at Melwood on Thursday.
“Initial indications suggest the 21-year-old is facing a spell of up to six weeks out of action, though this is dependent on how his treatment and rehabilitation programmes progress.”
News of Gomez’s spell on the sidelines will come as a blow to Jurgen Klopp’s side following his fine form in recent weeks.
The 21-year-old has made 13 Premier League appearances this season and has been earning plenty of praise for his solid displays for the Reds.
Meanwhile, Liverpool FC are currently preparing for their Premier League clash against Bournemouth on Saturday lunchtime as they look to keep up the pressure on Manchester City at the top of the table.
The Reds can move above City with victory over Bournemouth, before Pep Guardiola’s men travel to Chelsea FC later in the day.
