Rio Ferdinand declared that Liverpool FC were worthy winners after they booked their spot in the last 16 of the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Napoli at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Mohamed Salah scored the only goal of the game in the 34th minute at Anfield as Jurgen Klopp’s men progressed through to the knockout phase of Europe’s elite club competition.

The Merseyside outfit progressed behind group winners Paris Saint-Germain and just ahead of Napoli, who finished level on points with the Reds.

Salah broke the deadlock in the first half when he fired his finish through David Ospina’s legs.

Napoli had chances to equalise and a fine save from Alisson Becker late on to deny Arkadiusz Milik helped Liverpool FC to cling on and progress.

Speaking immediately after the final whistle, former Manchester United defender Ferdinand said on BT Sport: “A great result.

“We spoke about the atmosphere that can be created within this stadium and we’ve seen it on many a night before in Europe. Today was no different – they supported their team to a man – and the team responded.

“They [Liverpool FC] controlled much of the game and had the better chances. Yes, Napoli created one or two chances but that happens at the top level.

“That man there (Mo Salah) – every time the ball came to him he was a threat, and he got the winner. They deserved it.”

Liverpool FC, who are one point clear at the top of the Premier League table, will now turn their attentions back to top flight affairs and the small matter of their home clash against Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

The Reds reached the Champions League final last season but were beaten by Real Madrid in the showpiece back in May.
