Jurgen Klopp: Virgil van Dijk exceeding my expectations at Liverpool FC
The Liverpool FC manager admits he has been impressed with Virgil van Dijk's start to his Anfield career after his goal in a 2-0 win at Wolves
Jurgen Klopp has admitted that Virgil van Dijk has exceeded his expectations at Liverpool FC after Friday night’s 2-0 win at Wolves.
The Netherlands international produced a man of the match performance to help the Merseyside outfit to secure three points and top spot in the Premier League table for Christmas Day.
The Reds broke the deadlock in the first half thanks to Mohamed Salah’s 11th goal of the Premier League season to continue his excellent form over the past month or so.
Wolves put Liverpool FC under pressure and Jurgen Klopp’s back four had some nervous moments in the final 25 minutes of the first half.
However, Van Dijk was the one Liverpool FC defender who maintained his composure and helped the Reds to see out their 11th clean sheet of the Premier League season.
The 27-year-old got on the score sheet in the second half to net his first Premier League goal for Liverpool FC following his world record move back in January.
Liverpool FC equalled a Premier League record held by Jose Mourinho’s first Chelsea FC team after conceding just seven goals in their opening 18 games in the Premier League.
Speaking to Sky Sports after Liverpool FC’s 2-0 win, Klopp replied when Manchester United legend Gary Neville asked if Van Dijk had exceeded his expectations”
“Yes, together with all the other boys around him, he is much better. It helps him as well.
“This afternoon I had time to watch on YouTube the game when Liverpool wanted Sadio Mane. Van Dijk played in that game and we lost 3-2 to Southampton after being 2-0 up. I couldn’t remember him playing in that game.
“It’s not that he was outstanding all the time. He had to improve. He still has to improve. He is an outstanding player.”
