Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told key Man United midfielder is now ‘average’
Former Irish defender Kevin Kilbane warns about 'average' Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic
Nemanja Matic is nothing more than an “average” Premier League midfielder following his decline at Manchester United, according to Kevin Kilbane.
The Serbia international moved to Manchester United in a £40m deal from Chelsea FC in the 2017 summer transfer window to bolster Jose Mourinho’s options in the middle of the park.
Matic worked with Mourinho during the Portuguese coach’s second spell at Stamford Bridge and the defensive midfielder helped the Blues to win the Premier League title in 2014-15.
The 30-year-old had a decent impact on the Manchester United team last season as he partnered Paul Pogba in the middle of the park alongside either Ander Herrera or Marouane Fellaini.
Matic has seemingly had an alarming drop in form in the current campaign to prompt criticism of the Serbia international over the past few weeks.
The former Benfica midfielder struggled badly in Manchester United’s 3-1 loss to bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League this month, as Matic failed to get to grips with Fabinho, Naby Keita and Georginio Wijnaldum.
The result led to Mourinho’s dismissal and the appointment of interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who secured a 5-1 win at Cardiff in his first game in charge on Saturday.
Former Republic of Ireland defender Kilbane delivered his withering verdict on the Manchester United midfielder following Jose Mourinho’s dismissal last week.
“Matic over the last 10 years has been one of the most consistent performers,” Kilbane told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“He was even good last year at Man United.
“I don’t want to say he’s gone – but he’s just an average Premier League midfielder now.”
Manchester United finished in second place in the Premier League table last term but Mourinho failed to win the trophy.
