Jamie Carragher singles out Marcus Rashford for praise after Man United's 4-1 win over Bournemouth
Jamie Carragher singled out Marcus Rashford for special praise after Manchester United sealed a 4-1 win over Bournemouth in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Red Devils claimed their third successive victory under interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as they enjoyed their mini-resurgence since the exit of Jose Mourinho.
Paul Pogba gave Manchester United the lead in the fifth minute thanks to Rashford’s brilliant play and assist.
Pogba then added a second in the 33rd minute, before Rashford made it 3-0 with a fine finish on the stroke of half-time.
Nathan Ake pulled a goal back for Bournemouth but substitute Romelu Lukaku made the points secure when he fired home from close range after replacing Rashford.
Manchester United then had Eric Bailly sent off late on.
Rashford was believed to have been brought off due to a groin problem, but Liverpool FC legend Carragher was full of praise for the England striker following his sparkling display at Old Trafford.
Speaking during Sky Sports‘ coverage of the game, Carragher said: “He was absolutely brilliant, Rashford [especially] in those first few minutes, making runs in behind…
“You hope from his point of view [his injury] doesn’t keep him out too long.
“The position he’s in, he doesn’t want to give Romelu Lukaku a sniff of getting that centre-forward position back.
“I know it’s a team game, but at times you’ve got to look after yourself.”
Of Manchester United’s recent performances, Carragher added: “There’s definitely a buzz and enjoyment at Old Trafford that we haven’t seen for a long time.”
The win left Manchester United in sixth place in the Premier League table and just three points behind fifth-placed Arsenal heading into the new year.
The Red Devils will take on Newcastle away from home in the Premier League on Wednesday night.
