Gary Lineker reacts to Jose Mourinho being sacked by Man United
The Spurs legend believes Jose Mourinho's dismissal at Manchester United was inevitable
Gary Lineker described Jose Mourinho’s sacking as “inevitable” after Manchester United parted company with the Portuguese manager on Tuesday.
The Red Devils suffered a 3-1 loss to bitter rivals Liverpool FC at Anfield on Sunday evening to leave Manchester United a staggering 19 points adrift of the leaders.
The 20-time English champions finished the weekend in sixth place in the Premier League table and 11 points behind his former club Chelsea FC in fourth place.
Manchester United did manage to book their place in the Champions League last 16 with a game to spare last month despite losing twice in the group stage.
However, Mourinho won’t have the chance to mastermind a potential upset against Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 after Manchester United sacked the Portuguese coach.
The 55-year-old took over the reins at Old Trafford in May 2016 and Mourinho won the Europa League and the League Cup during his two-and-a-half seasons in charge.
Former Spurs legend Lineker delivered his verdict on Mourinho’s predictable sacking.
Lineker wrote on Twitter: “With @ManUtd 19 points behind @LFC after 17 games, with the vast majority of players playing way below their best…and dour football to boot. Given Mourinho was allowed to spend hundreds of millions on those players the split seemed inevitable.”
Manchester United will take on Cardiff City in their next Premier League game in Wales on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils have invested nearly £400m on new players since Mourinho replaced Louis van Gaal.
Manchester United finished in sixth place and in runners up spot in his two Premier League campaigns at Old Trafford.
