Jamie Carragher has admitted that he isn’t surprised that Manchester United decided to sack Jose Mourinho on Tuesday.

The Red Devils opted to part company with Mourinho after the 20-time English champions lost 3-1 to bitter rivals Liverpool FC at Anfield last weekend.

Mourinho leaves Manchester United in sixth place in the Premier League table and 11 points behind Chelsea FC, who occupy the final Champions League qualification spot.

Manchester United turned to Mourinho in May 2016 after Louis van Gaal led the Red Devils to a fifth-placed finish in his final season in charge.

The 55-year-old did manage to win silverware at Old Trafford after Manchester United won the Europa League and the League Cup in his debut campaign.

Mourinho fell out with Manchester United record signing Paul Pogba in the last couple of months to heap further pressure on the Red Devils boss.

Former Liverpool FC defender Carragher delivered his verdict on Manchester United’s decision to part company with Mourinho.

“You have to go back to the start of the season, I thought it was inevitable Jose Mourinho wouldn’t be the manager the following season,” Carragher told Sky Sports News.

“There’s been a lot of problems between him and the board and with his big-name players within the squad, there was a massive downturn in the relationship that was there for all to see.

“Taking the captaincy off Pogba, giving it to him in the first place, it all just looked like it was coming to an end and that was before a ball was even kicked.”

Manchester United finished in second place in the Premier League table last term after the Red Devils ended up 19 points adrift of champions Manchester City.

Mourinho leaves Manchester United in sixth spot and 19 points adrift of Premier League leaders Liverpool FC after 17 games.

The Red Devils will make the trip to Cardiff City on Saturday evening.
