Alan Shearer: Only one Man United player is performing right now
Alan Shearer has his say on Manchester United's current situation before the sacking of Jose Mourinho
Alan Shearer has claimed that David De Gea is the only player in the Manchester United team who is delivering on his potential at the moment.
Jose Mourinho found himself under intense pressure at Old Trafford in recent weeks following his side’s stuttering form, and he was eventually sacked on Tuesday morning.
The Red Devils lost further ground on their Premier League rivals on Sunday when they suffered a disappointing 3-1 loss to Liverpool FC at Anfield.
That defeat left them a staggering 19 points behind Liverpool FC, and with the Red Devils now focusing on trying to break back into the top four before the season is out.
There has been much debate about the situation at Old Trafford and who is to blame, and former England star Shearer clearly feels that only De Gea is stepping up to the plate at the moment.
Speaking on Match of the Day 2 before the news of Mourinho’s sacking was confirmed, Shearer said: “At the moment in that Manchester United team, only David De Gea is performing to his potential.
“Something has to change at the club. There is a lot of work needed in that team. There’s a lack of ability.
“The board clearly didn’t back him [Mourinho] in the summer. Jose had his targets and for whatever reason they weren’t allowed to come in. But it’s not always the manager’s fault.
“I don’t think many United players came off on Sunday thinking they had done their best.”
Manchester United will look to return to winning ways on Saturday evening when they take on Cardiff City away from home.
The Red Devils are likely to be linked with a number of players in the coming weeks as the January transfer window presents Manchester United with the chance to bolster their squad.
