The French striker was not named in the matchday squad for the Boxing Game clash at Old Trafford on Wednesday afternoon as Paul Pogba scored twice to help inspire the Red Devils to a 3-1 victory in front of the club’s home fans.
Martial played a significant role in Manchester United’s 5-1 win over Cardiff in Solskjaer’s first game in interim charge of the club at the weekend as he found the net for the Red Devils.
However, he was not included in the squad on Wednesday, and Solskjaer has now revealed that was due to illness.
Speaking in an interview with MUTV, Solskjaer said: “He [Martial] must have had a bad chef over Christmas – he has fallen ill. If it is food poisoning or if it is something else, I don’t know.
”Hopefully, he will be fit for the game on Sunday. The other two [Diogo Dalot and Fred in for Ashley Young and Ander Herrera] are just changes that I think are right for this game.“
Martial has been in decent form for Manchester United so far this season, scoring eight goals in 14 Premier League games for the Red Devils.
He will be hoping to have recovered in time to be fit for Manchester United’s clash with Bournemouth at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
Manchester United’s win over Huddersfield left the Red Devils in sixth place in the Premier League table and eight points behind fourth-placed Chelsea FC.
