Reporter: Man United eyeing 20-year-old FC Porto star
Daily Record reporter Duncan Castles sheds light on why Manchester United are interested in Eder Militao
Eder Militao is a potential option to improve the Manchester United defence if Jose Mourinho is unable to land a marquee signing, according to Daily Record reporter Duncan Castles.
The Red Devils have struggled at the back this season following persistent injury problems to force Mourinho to field Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic in his defence for last weekend’s 2-2 draw at Southampton.
Marcos Rojo and Eric Bailly were the makeshift centre-half pairing for the visit of Arsenal in midweek and the pair struggled during the 2-2 draw with the Gunners after the Argentina international scored an own goal.
Castles, who is known to have good sources in the Mourinho camp, broke the story last week that Manchester United were interested in FC Porto defender Militao despite his lack of experience at the top level in Europe.
Speaking to the Transfer Window podcast, Daily Record reporter Castles shed more light on Manchester United’s apparent interest in the raw FC Porto star ahead of the January transfer window, revealing that Manchester City had previously shown an interest.
“The ongoing multi-year search for a reliable defensive heart of Man United defence…” said Castles.
“Another name they are looking at and have proposed as an option in January is Eder Militao. He is a 20-year-old only signed by Porto in the summer from Sao Paolo.
“He has been watched by a number of English clubs before – he was on Man City’s watchlist.
“He is an alternative if Mourinho can’t get what he really wants, which is an experienced centre-half in January.”
Militao moved to FC Porto in the summer transfer window after the Portuguese club opted to take a punt on the centre-half.
The Brazilian defender has scored one goal in 14 games for FC Porto this term.
