Man United to make this one signing in January – report
Manchester United have given the green light for Jose Mourinho to sign a defender in January, say reports
Manchester United have given Jose Mourinho the green light to sign a new defender in January, according to reports in the British media.
The Sun is reporting that Manchester United chiefs have agreed to sanction a move for a new defensive player in the new year as Mourinho looks to bolster his squad.
The same story says that Manchester United’s top target in January is Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld.
According to the same story, Manchester United chief Ed Woodward met with Mourinho and his agent Jorge Mendes last week to draw up plans for the forthcoming transfer window.
The report claims that Mourinho’s first choice signing would be Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly – however, he is likely to be too expensive as he is valued at around £90m.
That means that Tottenham defender Alderweireld could become the Red Devils’ top target, with the Belgian out of contract next summer.
The same story reports that Manchester United would hope to secure the services of the 29-year-old Belgian for around £40m in January.
Whether Tottenham would be willing to let Alderweireld go in January remains to be seen, with the defender having started 14 of Spurs’ 16 Premier League games so far this term.
Much has been made of Manchester United’s defensive struggles this season, with the Red Devils having conceded more goals than any of the five teams ahead of them in the Premier League table.
