Napoli president Aurelios de Laurentiis has confirmed that Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho orchestrated a £95m bid for Kalidou Koulibaly.

The Red Devils parted company with Mourinho on Tuesday after Manchester United slumped to a 3-1 loss to bitter rivals Liverpool FC at Anfield in their last Premier League fixture under the Portuguese coach.

Manchester United conceded 28 times in 17 games in the Premier League to earn the club the fifth worst defensive record in the top flight before the 20-time English champions opted to sack Mourinho.

Mourinho was thought to be eager to sign a centre-half to bolster his options at the back after Manchester United missed out on Leicester defender Harry Maguire and Tottenham’s Belgian Toby Alderweireld in the summer.

The Red Devils paid the price for not investing in their back four and Manchester United have struggled to keep Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling fit in the current campaign.

Reports in the past couple of months suggested that Mourinho was keen on a potential deal to sign Koulibaly, 27, to improve his central defence.

Napoli president Laurentiis has confirmed that Manchester United made a world record bid to sign the Senegal international before his dismissal.

“[Jose] Mourinho wanted him, we rejected £95million,” De Laurentiis is quoted as saying by the Daily Express.

“But now it’s impossible that he leaves Napoli.”

Manchester United signed Villarreal defender Eric Bailly and Benfica centre-half Victor Lindelof in deals worth around £60m under Mourinho.
