Michael Owen believes Valencia will beat Manchester United in the Champions League at The Mestalla on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils managed to return to winning ways in the Premier League at the weekend thanks to a 4-1 win over promoted side Fulham at Old Trafford.

Goals from Ashley Young, Juan Mata, Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford secured three points for Manchester United to hoist Jose Mourinho’s side up to sixth place.

Manchester United have already booked their place in the Champions League round of 16 thanks to a 1-0 win against Young Boys at Old Trafford last time out.

Marouane Fellaini proved to be the match-winner following his 90th minute goal to ensure Manchester United will be playing Champions League football in 2019.

Former Manchester United striker Owen believes Valencia will beat the Premier League side before embarking on their Europa League campaign next year.

“Valencia have failed to score in six of their last eight Champions League ties, but I feel the La Liga side can win in the Mestalla although United can still, mathematically, top the group if they win in Spain and Juventus fail to do so in Switzerland against Young Boys,” Owen told BetVictor.

“United are guaranteed a place in next Monday’s draw for the last 16 and have won their two previous away games in the competition so far this season.

“They were, arguably, fortunate to win in Turin, however, and I feel Valencia will end their Champions League campaign with a win before embarking on a Europa league challenge in 2019.”

Manchester United are too far off the pace to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

The Red Devils are in sixth spot and 16 points adrift of leaders Liverpool FC in the title race.

As a result, the Champions League represents a genuine chance to win silverware this term.

Although Manchester United don’t have the best squad in the competition, Mourinho is a two-time winner of the Champions League.
