Paul Merson is backing Arsenal to secure a 3-1 win against Fulham in the Premier League at The Emirates on Tuesday.

The Gunners suffered a resounding 5-1 loss to Liverpool FC at Anfield last weekend despite Arsenal youngster Ainsley Maitland-Niles making the breakthrough in the first half.

Arsenal’s defence struggled to cope with the pace of Liverpool FC’s front four as Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Xherdan Shaqiri and Sadio Mane got on the score sheet.

Unai Emery’s side can take encouragement from a nine-game unbeaten run in the Premier League at the Emirates Stadium since a 2-0 loss to defending champions Manchester City.

Arsenal will take on a Fulham side that managed to record just their second win in 17 games in the Premier League last weekend thanks to a 1-0 win against Huddersfield Town.

However, Fulham have only managed to collect two points from their 10 games on the road in the Premier League this season to underline the size of the challenge facing Claudio Ranieri’s men on Tuesday.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson is backing the Gunners to ease to a resounding 3-1 win against Fulham at the Emirates Stadium on New Year’s Day.

“The other day was typical Arsenal,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“I don’t know what’s changed. I know they went on that run but half of those games, they could have probably lost. Then you go to Southampton, they’re settling for a draw and end up winning the game, go to Liverpool and it was same-old, same-old.

“This one, I’ll go for them because… This is Arsenal. They’re flat-track bullies, they’ll beat the lesser teams all day long.”

Merson added: “After the win over Huddersfield the other day, it was a big goal from Aleksander Mitrovic, but I watched Fulham at Newcastle too and they were solid and Newcastle never looked like scoring.

“I know that attack is nowhere near Arsenal’s but they defended well and they’ll try that too here. If I was them though I’d try and have a swing, although you don’t want to be on the wrong end of six goals when it could go down to goal difference at the bottom.”

Arsenal have an imperious record against their west London neighbours, having never lost at home to Fulham in any competition in the last 114 years.
