Ian Wright warns Arsenal can’t afford to leave out Mesut Ozil

The Arsenal legend was left bemused by Mesut Ozil's omission from Unai Emery's squad for Saturday's 1-0 loss to West Ham

Ian Wright has warned Unai Emery that Arsenal don’t have the luxury of omitting Mesut Ozil from their matchday squads.

The former Germany international was a noticeable absentee once again as Arsenal made the short trip to London rivals West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Ozil has only started 12 of their 24 games in the Premier League this season to raise questions about his long-term future under Arsene Wenger’s replacement.

The Spanish head coach hasn’t been afraid to leave out Ozil despite the 30-year-old being the north London side’s best-paid player in their history.

Arsenal suffered a 1-0 loss to West Ham in the London derby in Stratford on Saturday after promising midfielder Declan Rice netted a second-half winner.

The Gunners were able to register two shots on target in a team performance that lacked creativity in the middle of the park.

Former Arsenal striker Wright questioned Emery’s decision to leave Ozil out of his match day squad for the trip to the Hammers.

“It is really worrying,” Wright told Match Of The Day on Saturday night.

“I know Emery has had his problems with big players in the dressing room before. It seems like Ozil is the one in this dressing room.

“I can’t get my head around Ozil not being in the 18. He should be given the chance to play himself into form. We can’t afford to have Arsenal’s best paid player in the club’s history out of the 18.

“Arsenal aren’t in the position where they can be leaving Ozil out, he should at least be involved.”

Ozil has scored three goals and has made one assist in 13 appearances in the Premier League this season.

The Gunners made Ozil the best paid player in their history in February 2018 to end speculation surrounding his long-term future.
