Sky Sports pundit tells Arsenal to sell six players
Charlie Nicholas doesn't hold back in his assessment of the Arsenal defence
Charlie Nicholas has suggested that Arsenal need to sell six of their defenders and revamp their squad.
The north London side have been coming to terms with the disappointment of their FA Cup exit at the hands of Manchester United at The Emirates on Friday night when they were beaten 3-1 by the Red Devils in front of their home fans.
Arsenal have been in stuttering form recently and their problems in defence have been well-documented over the course of the season.
Unai Emery will likely be looking ahead to the summer transfer window as a chance to bring in some new faces and continue adding to his squad at The Emirates.
Now, Arsenal legend Nicholas has admitted that he is wholly unimpressed by the Gunners’ back-line and has suggested that the north London side need to get rid of most of their defenders.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Nicholas said: “I don’t know what we expect from Arsenal. You talk about tactics. Yeah, he [Emery] can set up a bit more defensively and be a bit more shrewd but this defence – and I mean all the defence – is a shambles.
“He’s tried a back five, he tried a back four last week that beats Chelsea. He tried another back four last night. It’s a shambles again. It’s a mess.
“The whole defensive set-up is a joke. From right-back, centre-backs, if it’s two or three, to left-back. There’s not a defender in the club. It’s shameful that it’s allowed to go on like this.
“The manager must take his responsibility but these players are a million miles from being good enough. He has to get rid of them all defensively.
“Out of eight defenders he keeps two, if you’re lucky.”
Arsenal will look to get back to winning ways when they return to Premier League action on Tuesday night with a home clash against Cardiff City.
The north London side currently find themselves in fifth place in the table as they bid to try and secure Champions League qualification for next season.
