Jamie Redknapp warns Arsenal about Aaron Ramsey exit
The Liverpool FC legend is critical of Arsenal's decision to allow Aaron Ramsey to run down his contract
Jamie Redknapp has warned Arsenal that Aaron Ramsey will cost at least £40m to replace in Unai Emery’s team.
The Wales international is set to leave the Gunners at the end of the season on a free transfer after Arsenal retracted a contract offer last year.
Ramsey is reportedly close to agreeing to a move to Serie A champions Juventus in the summer when the 28-year-old becomes a free agent.
The former Cardiff City midfielder has a wealth of experience after 11 seasons at the north London side.
Ramsey was one of Unai Emery’s star players in Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Chelsea FC at The Emirates on Saturday evening to bolster their top-four prospects.
Former Liverpool FC captain Redknapp felt that Ramsey was Emery’s best performer at the weekend, adding that Arsenal can ill-afford to lose the dynamic midfielder.
“Aaron Ramsey was the standout player for Arsenal in their superb victory over Chelsea,” Redknapp told the Daily Mail.
“It was a match tailor-made for him. Ramsey used his superior energy to harry Jorginho, always looking to pinch the ball from the midfielder and hurt Chelsea on the break.
“Yet his brilliant performance only highlights the mistakes Arsenal have made over the last few years. How can they let such an influential player leave for nothing at the end of the season?”
Mesut Ozil didn’t come off the bench in the 2-0 win against their bitter London rivals despite the German being the club’s best-paid player.
While the World Cup winner has contributed very little to Emery’s first season in charge, Ramsey has been one of the Spanish manager’s most consistent players.
Arsenal made Ozil their best-paid player in February 2018 when the retired Germany international was handed a £350,000-a-week contract.
Redknapp has criticised Arsenal’s strategy over the past 12 month before adding that Ramsey will cost £40m to replace in Emery’s team.
“If Emery is not going to pick Ozil for a match of this importance, he cannot be part of the manager’s long-term plans,” Redknapp added.
“So why did the club make him the second-highest-paid Premier League player on £350,000 a week only a year ago?
“Arsenal are counting the cost of letting star players run down their contracts. Faced with losing both Ozil and Alexis Sanchez last January, the club panicked.
“Not only are they in a situation where Emery cannot buy any players this month, Arsenal will also have to spend at least £40million this summer to replace Ramsey.
“At his best, Ramsey is like Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in the way he effortlessly gets from one end of the pitch to the other.”
