Unai Emery gives fresh Arsenal transfer update on Denis Suarez
The Arsenal manager discusses the north London side's efforts to sign FC Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez
Unai Emery is still hopeful that Arsenal can complete a January signing but has no update on the club’s pursuit of Denis Suarez.
The Gunners have been linked with a swoop to sign the FC Barcelona midfielder throughout the January transfer window.
However, Arsenal have not yet officially confirmed a deal with the Spanish champions despite Emery’s apparent eagerness to sign the 25-year-old.
Reports in the British media have suggested that FC Barcelona wanted to include an obligation to buy Suarez at the end of the season.
Arsenal, on the other hand, are thought to be open to taking Suarez on loan but only have the option to purchase the former Spain Under-21 international in the summer.
Widespread reports on Wednesday evening suggested that Arsenal had completed a deal to sign Suarez on loan for this season.
The Gunners were 2-1 winners against Cardiff City at The Emirates on Tuesday night to bolster their top-four prospects.
Asked during his post-match media conference about Arsenal’s attempts to sign Suarez, Emery said:
“There’s no change in my idea, I think the same.
“If some players can come here to help us, they will come. The latest news? I don’t know. Today all my focus has been on this match.
“I’ve not spoken with anyone at the club who is working on that. Maybe tonight or tomorrow, I will speak about the latest news.
“My idea is the same: if we can sign one player to help us, it’s good for us.”
He continued: “Generally speaking, we need wingers and if you have a player like Denis, I know him because he played for me at Sevilla. His quality is this.
“I don’t know now. If he can come, it’s a challenge for him and it’s also to help us.”
Arsenal signed five players in the summer transfer window following Emery’s appointment as Arsene Wenger’s replacement back in May.
However, the Gunners have been unable to reinforce the Spanish manager’s squad this month.
Chelsea FC, on the other hand, managed to get a loan deal over the line for experienced Argentina international Gonzalo Higuain.
Arsenal will take on defending Premier League champions Manchester City in their next fixture on Sunday.
