Unai Emery replies when asked how signings Arsenal will make before transfer deadline
The Arsenal manager is tipping the Gunners to sign "between nil and two" players before Thursday's transfer deadline
Unai Emery says Arsenal will make between “nil and two signings” before the close of the January transfer window at 23:00 GMT on Thursday night.
The Gunners have been linked with a host of players this month but Arsenal have struggled to get any deals over the line.
It has been widely reported that the north London side are limited to signing players on loan in the current window.
Arsenal were initially linked with a swoop to sign FC Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez, who played under Emery at Sevilla in 2015-16.
However, the Gunners have seemingly turned their attention elsewhere after Arsenal were unable to agree terms with the La Liga champions.
The British media reported on Sunday that Arsenal had made an audacious loan offer for Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic.
However, Inter Milan have been clear in their stance that they won’t allow the Croatia international to leave this month unless their valuation is met.
Speaking at his media conference at London Colney on Monday afternoon, the Arsenal manager was asked how many players he hopes to sign before the end of the week.
Emery replied: “Nil or possibly two. Between nil and two. If they aren’t coming to help us like we want, then we would prefer them to not come. Two because we are looking at two different players who have the possibility to come here.”
On the reported interest in Perisic, Emery replied: “It’s one thing the club is working on, the possibility with different players. I don’t know exactly which players, but it’s players with the possibility to help us who can play on the wing, right or left…
“I think all the players who can come here and help us is good news.”
The Gunners boss went on to add that it was unlikely that there would be any departures before the close of the window.
“I think there is a very small possibility of letting players leave. It’s difficult to name a player who could leave,” Emery said.
Asked directly about Suarez, he continued: “This transfer is not easy and the message is that the club is working on different players. The possibility, if it can be [done], is good for us.”
Arsenal lost 3-1 to Manchester United in the FA Cup fourth round at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night.
The Gunners signed five players in Emery’s first transfer window in charge of Arsenal.
