Paul Merson is backing Tottenham Hotspur to return to winning ways on New Year’s Day when Spurs take on Cardiff City at Wembley.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side saw their five-game winning run come to an end at Wembley despite England international Harry Kane breaking the deadlock in the Premier League clash.

However, Wolves managed to bounce back in the final 18 minutes thanks to goals from Willy Boly, Raul Jiminez and Helder Costa to secure a shock 3-1 win.

Tottenham surrendered the chance to establish themselves as Liverpool FC’s closest rivals in the Premier League title race after having scored 11 times in two games.

Cardiff, on the other hand, have collected four points from their last two outings to hoist themselves up to 16th place in the Premier League table out of the relegation zone.

The Bluebirds were 1-0 winners against Leicester City to move three points ahead of the relegation zone.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson is backing Tottenham to make a swift return to winning ways against the promoted side in Wales on New Year’s Day.

“The pressure’s off Tottenham now, and they’ll be like the Harlem Globetrotters,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“I can’t see anything but an away win. You can go to Liverpool and get beat, or other places, but not at home by Wolves.

Spurs have won their last five Premier League games on New Year’s Day to suggest a return to winning ways is likely.

Kane, who scored Tottenham’s only goal in a 3-1 loss to Wolves, has netted 15 times in his last 11 away games.
