Joe Cole reacts to Eden Hazard’s display in Chelsea FC’s win over Tottenham
The Chelsea FC legend felt Eden Hazard impressed in a more traditional role in Maurizio Sarri's team
Joe Cole singled out Olivier Giroud and Eden Hazard for praise after Chelsea FC’s penalty shootout win over Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup semi-final on Thursday night.
Chelsea FC manager Maurizio Sarri has used Hazard in a lone striker role throughout much of the Premier League season so far due to the poor form of Alvaro Morata.
However, the Chelsea FC boss opted to start Giroud for the visit of Tottenham in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final in west London.
With the World Cup winner in a central role, Hazard reverted back to a deeper position and the move paid dividends as the Belgian forward was dominant in the first half.
And Hazard got on the score sheet in the 38th minute of the Stamford Bridge clash after N’Golo Kante’s opener when he managed to find some space in the box and slot a finish past Paulo Gazzaniga.
Indeed, the 28-year-old was helped by Giroud, who made an unselfish run to create space in the area for the Chelsea FC number 10 to score his 11th goal of the season in all competitions.
Fernando Llorente levelled the tie on aggregate with a rare goal in the second half but Chelsea FC secured their place in the League Cup final thanks to David Luiz’s winning penalty in the shootout.
Former Chelsea FC attacker Cole felt Hazard and Giroud excelled in their traditional roles in the Blues team.
“Hazard turns and Tottenham were panicking,” Cole told Sky Sports.
“Giroud’s run attracts attention and enables Hazard to come from a deeper position. Giroud makes an unselfish run and Hazard ghosts in and it’s a nice finish.
“You have two players affecting the game in a position where they are comfortable.”
Eric Dier and Lucas Moura missed their penalty kicks in the shootout as Chelsea FC set up a League Cup final against Manchester City.
After the final whistle, Cole added: “Eden Hazard was a different class again tonight.
“He took the ball in difficult situations and attracted so many players towards him.
“I felt he led the team today with his performance on the pitch and he was a pleasure to watch.
“You see how much these fans enjoy watching him. He’s just a top-class player.”
Chelsea FC signed Gonzalo Higuain in a loan deal from Juventus earlier this week.
