Gianfranco Zola gives Chelsea FC transfer update on Callum Hudson-Odoi
The Chelsea FC assistant manager is hopeful that Callum Hudson-Odoi will remain at Stamford Bridge for the long haul
Gianfranco Zola says he is optimistic Callum Hudson-Odoi will score more goals for Chelsea FC after the teenager’s goal in their 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup on Sunday.
Chelsea FC manager Maurizio Sarri opted to give the 18-year-old some more first-team minutes despite the talented forward being linked with a move to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
Reports in the British media ahead of the fourth round clash suggested that Hudson-Odoi had rejected a new contract offer from Chelsea FC in favour of forcing through a move to the German champions.
Perhaps in an attempt to satisfy Hudson-Odoi’s desire for first-team football, Sarri named the teenager in his starting XI for the visit of the Owls on Sunday night.
The move paid dividends in the short term after Hudson-Odoi scored the west London side’s second goal in the 64th minute to help secure a 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday.
The reported Bayern Munich target has now scored one goal and has made two assists in two FA Cup appearances in the 2018-19 season.
Chelsea FC assistant manager Zola emphasised the club’s desire to see Hudson-Odoi remain at Stamford Bridge.
“He has a contract. We believe in what he can do for this team,” Zola told his post-match media conference after Chelsea FC’s win.
“I don’t think there are many 18-year-old players around Europe that are are playing as much as him in a big team.
“If you look at Juventus, all the big teams, they don’t have many 18-year-old players playing like we do. That shows that we believe in him, we think he can be an important player for us, so we will see what happens.
“We can do as much as we can do. From our point of view he has a lot of strong players next to him. But we still find the space for him to play.
“Did he look like he didn’t want to play? Yesterday in training he scored a fantastic goal.”
Hudson-Odoi has scored two goals and has made three assists in nine games in all competitions in the current campaign.
