Mark Lawrenson is backing League Cup finalists Chelsea FC to secure a narrow win against Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday.

Maurizio Sarri’s squad responded to their manager’s criticism in the wake of a 2-0 loss at Arsenal last weekend with a big performance in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

Goals from N’Golo Kante and Eden Hazard gave Chelsea FC a slight advantage in the second leg on Thursday night after Harry Kane scored the only goal in the first leg at Wembley.

Fernando Llorente’s second-half goal forced penalties but Chelsea FC held their nerve to reach their first final under the former Napoli manager.

The Blues have the chance to make progress in another cup competition on Sunday when Sarri’s men host Championship team Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup.

January signing Gonzalo Higuain could make his debut in the fourth round clash after Olivier Giroud’s wasteful performance against Tottenham last week.

Former Liverpool FC defender Lawrenson is backing Chelsea FC to edge to a narrow 2-1 win against Sheffield Wednesday to secure their place in the fifth round.

“New Sheffield Wednesday manager Steve Bruce does not take charge of the team until 1 February but his assistants Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence have done pretty well, and have only lost one out of five games this month,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.

“But going to Stamford Bridge is going to be a step up, obviously, and Wednesday remain a club in limbo until Bruce walks through the door, no matter how many telephone conversations he has had with them.

“Chelsea are in the same situation as Tottenham, in that they could go out of two domestic cups in the space of three days, but I don’t think there is much danger of that happening.”

Lawrenson added: “I will be co-commentating on this game on BBC One, and it should be a great atmosphere because the Owls will bring lots of fans with them.

“It will be interesting to see how new Chelsea striker Gonzalo Higuain gets on too, because surely he has to play.

“But despite the problems that Blues boss Maurizio Sarri is having with his dressing room, I can only see one outcome.”

Chelsea FC signed Borussia Dortmund playmaker Christian Pulisic and Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain in the January transfer window.

The United States international was loaned back to Dortmund for the remainder of the 2018-19 season.
