Gary Neville reacts to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s display in Liverpool FC’s 2-1 loss at Man City
Gary Neville praises Trent Alexander-Arnold for his role in Liverpool FC's goal against Man City despite the Reds' defeat
Gary Neville singled out Trent Alexander-Arnold for special praise for the part he played in Roberto Firmino’s goal during Liverpool FC’s 2-1 loss to Manchester City at The Etihad on Thursday night.
Manchester City took the lead in the 40th minute when Sergio Aguero drilled his finish into the roof of the net from an acute angle.
However, Liverpool FC drew level in the 64th minute following fantastic work from Alexander-Arnold on the right wing.
The 20-year-old’s long-range pass found Andy Robertson, whose cross was finished by Firmino.
But Liverpool FC found themselves behind again in the 72nd minute thanks to Leroy Sane’s fine finish as the Citizens claimed the three points.
Speaking during Sky Sports‘ coverage of the game, Neville pulled out the positive of Alexander-Arnold’s performance, highlighting his contribution for his side’s goal.
Neville said after Firmino’s equaliser: “Great credit to Alexander-Arnold. It was wonderful quality from both full-backs.
“He just sells Leroy Sane a dummy and sees Andy Robertson at the far post.
“Then you’re just talking about whether Robertson has the quality, the control and the composure to guide it back into the area where Firmino is unmarked. He’ll never score an easier goal.”
The defeat was Liverpool FC’s first loss in the Premier League this season.
And Liverpool FC legend Jamie Carragher admitted that the result has blown the Premier League title race back open again.
“There is no doubt, there’s a huge title race back on,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.
“Four points at this point of the season is still a healthy lead. But they have to put it right as soon as they can.
“City were outstanding tonight, they were better than Liverpool.”
Jurgen Klopp’s men remain at the top of the Premier League table but their lead at the top has been cut down to four points by last season’s champions.
Liverpool FC travel to Wolves in the FA Cup third round on Monday night.
