Jurgen Klopp rates Fabinho’s performance in Liverpool FC’s 1-0 win
The Liverpool FC manager opens up about Fabinho's performance in Saturday's 1-0 win against Brighton
Jurgen Klopp hailed Fabinho’s brilliant performance in Liverpool FC’s 1-0 win against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.
The Reds made the trip to Brighton in pursuit of a first win in three outings following a 2-1 loss to Manchester City in the Premier League and a 2-1 defeat by Wolves in the FA Cup third round.
Dejan Lovren suffered an early injury in the cup clash to join Klopp’s growing casualties at the back, with Joe Gomez and Joel Matip both sidelined with fitness concerns.
Fabinho started alongside Virgil van Dijk at Brighton and the Brazilian excelled in his centre-half role as Liverpool FC kept their 13th clean sheet of the campaign.
The summer signing managed to thwart Glenn Murray, while Mohamed Salah scored a second-half winner to leave Liverpool FC with a seven-point advantage over Manchester City ahead of the defending champions’ home clash against Wolves on Monday night.
Speaking at his post-media-conference about Fabinho’s performance in Liverpool FC’s 1-0 win at Brighton, Klopp said:
“He’s a brilliant player and I was happy he could play [on Saturday].
“It’s not that Brighton had one attack after the other – we had the ball most of the time so it makes sense to have a good footballer in that position.
“Brighton tried a little bit to bring the long balls to Murray and around him, which they did, by the way, against Joe Gomez in the home game as well. But he did well in these situations and with the ball.
“He has a defending brain and can do that in different positions. It’s good.”
Liverpool FC haven’t won the Premier League title but finished in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014.
Klopp has led Liverpool FC to successive top-four finishes but the Reds are challenging for the title for the first time under the German head coach this season.
