John Barnes: This is key for Liverpool FC in title race
The former Liverpool FC captain tells The Sport Review that Jurgen Klopp needs his key players to remain fit in the title race
Liverpool FC need to keep their key players fit if the Reds want to win the Premier League title this season, John Barnes has warned Jurgen Klopp.
The Merseyside outfit are in a strong position in the title race after an impressive opening 24 games in the top flight.
Liverpool FC are flying high at the top of the Premier League table as they bid to try and win their first major trophy under the German manager.
They dropped points in a frustrating 1-1 draw with Leicester City at Anfield on Wednesday night but are still five points clear of Manchester City with 14 games left to play.
Crucially for Klopp, key players such as Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah have hit top form over the past couple of months after a slow start to the season.
Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk has managed to remain injury free, while Alisson Becker hasn’t missed a Premier League game in his first campaign in English football.
Liverpool FC’s squad isn’t as deep as defending Premier League champions Manchester City, so Klopp can ill afford to lose key members of his team in the title race.
Former Reds captain Barnes believes Liverpool FC need to keep at least two of Sadio Mane, Firmino and Salah fit in the remaining months of the 2018-19 season.
“It is important to keep the big players fit. Man City can make changes and still be consistent.
“It is important to keep at least two of the front three fit and playing well. Man City can lose big players and win, whereas as we can’t.”
Liverpool FC have finished in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014 under Gerard Houllier, Rafael Benitez and Klopp.
The Reds haven’t made any signings in the January transfer window so far.
