Graeme Souness believes Liverpool FC are still in a strong position in the Premier League title race despite Manchester City answering some questions in Thursday night’s 2-1 win over the leaders.

The Citizens welcomed Jurgen Klopp’s men to the Etihad Stadium knowing that a loss would leave Liverpool FC nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Liverpool FC won seven successive Premier League games ahead of their trip to the Eastlands outfit and the Merseyside club had managed to avoid defeat in their opening 21 top-flight outings.

But Manchester City sealed a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Sergio Aguero and Leroy Sane after Roberto Firmino had cancelled out the Argentina international’s opener.

The Citizens moved to within four points of Premier league leaders Liverpool FC to ensure a competitive title race in the remaining months of the 2018-19 season.

Pep Guardiola’s side lost three times during the festive schedule to lose ground on their title rivals following defeats by Chelsea FC, Crystal Palace and Leicester City.

Former Liverpool FC captain Souness believes Klopp’s men have the momentum heading into the final five months of the Premier League season.

“Do I think any differently about the title? No. I think Liverpool are in a great place,” Souness told Sky Sports.

“It’s the first week of January and they’ve lost for the first time. I know which team I’d rather be playing for over the second half of the season, and I think the momentum is very much with Liverpool.

“I think City have come unstuck before, so there are still questions there, though a lot of them have been answered tonight.”

The Reds will take on Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the Champions League round of 16 next month.

Manchester City, on the other hand, will also face German opposition in the shape of Schalke 04.
