Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Man United star is clearly the best in the world
The interim Manchester United manager talks up David De Gea after his impressive performance at Spurs on Sunday
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hailed David De Gea as the best goalkeeper in the world after the Manchester United number one played a key role in Sunday’s 1-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur.
The Red Devils made the trip to the English capital in pursuit of a sixth successive victory since the former Manchester United striker took over the reins at Old Trafford last month.
Manchester United made the breakthrough in the 44th minute when Paul Pogba’s brilliant pass set Marcus Rashford free and the England striker produced a clinical finish.
De Gea came into his own in the second half as Manchester United managed to survive an impressive performance from Tottenham after half-time.
The Spain international made 11 saves to prevent Spurs from equalising in the Premier League clash, including a brilliant stop at the near post to deny Belgium international Toby Alderweireld.
The 28-year-old was named the man of the match after his imperious performance in the Manchester United goal.
Speaking at his post-match media conference about De Gea’s performance in Manchester United’s impressive win, Solskjaer said:
“[David was] fantastic. Obviously when you make 11 saves that is a top, top performance but then again I thought that one or two were really good saves and then the rest of them you would expect David to save.
“He is the best goalkeeper in the world, I have said it many times. It is about positioning and concentration to be in the right position. Maybe one or two of them were uncatchable, but the saves he makes are because he is so in tune with the game.
“He is following the game, moving all the time. They don’t always look fantastic because he is in the right position.”
Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013 when De Gea helped Sir Alex Ferguson to get his hands on his final top-flight crown.
The Red Devils will take on Brighton in their next home fixture at Old Trafford on Saturday.
