Pat Nevin warns Chelsea FC about Man United challenge
The Chelsea legend believes Manchester United are in a strong position to challenge for a top-four finish this season
Pat Nevin believes Manchester United are genuine top-four contenders after their impressive start under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The former Manchester United striker took over the reins at Old Trafford last month after Jose Mourinho’s disastrous start to his third season.
The Portuguese manager left the Red Devils in sixth place in the Premier League table and 11 points adrift of the top four.
Manchester United have won six successive Premier League games under Solskjaer, who has successfully restored the club’s traditional values.
The Red Devils laid down a marker last weekend with a 1-0 win at third-placed Tottenham Hotspur thanks to Marcus Rashford’s goal before Manchester United eased to a 2-1 win over Brighton on Saturday afternoon.
Manchester United are level on points with Arsenal and three points adrift of Chelsea FC, who occupy the final Champions League qualification spot.
Former Chelsea FC winger Nevin believes Manchester United must be taken seriously in the race to finish in the top four.
“He has them back and part of the conversation [for a top-four finish],” Nevin told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“They are level on points with Arsenal. Chelsea aren’t flying at the moment. They are definitely in the conversation for the top four.
“It’s good to be chasing when you have the momentum as well.”
Manchester United finished in second position in the Premier League table last term but have been unable to consolidate and challenge defending champions Manchester City.
The Red Devils will take on Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16 next month with a place in the quarter-finals up for grabs.
Manchester United haven’t won the Champions League or the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
