Graeme Souness has urged Manchester United to hand Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the permanent head coach role at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils turned to their former striker last month after a disappointing start to the season under Jose Mourinho.

Manchester United have been in a rich vein of form after winning their opening seven games in all competitions under the Norwegian manager.

The 20-time English champions recorded their biggest win under the interim manager to date last weekend at Wembley.

Marcus Rashford’s 44th-minute goal secured a 1-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur to bolster their top-four prospects.

Manchester United moved to within three points of fourth-placed Chelsea FC on Saturday after a 2-1 home win over Brighton.

Solskjaer has made no secret of his desire to secure the role on a permanent basis despite his lack of experience in Premier League management.

Former Liverpool FC and Spurs midfielder Souness believes Solskjaer deserves a shot at the Manchester United job.

“I said with my son that I think it is time they go down the road of an ex-Man United player,” Souness told Sky Sports.

“They went for David Moyes, but I don’t think they gave him enough time despite being the chosen one. Then they went for two of the biggest names in football management.

“There is no quick fix to Man United. I doubt they will be dominant next season.

“Anyone coming in will need to have time and a bit more. I think Ole would get that.”

Manchester United have turned to David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho since Sir Alex Ferguson won his 13th and final top-flight crown in 2013.

Van Gaal won the first trophy of the post-Ferguson era when Manchester United were 2-1 winners against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final in 2016.

Mourinho led the Red Devils to Europa League and League Cup glory in his first season in charge but finished the 2017-18 season without a trophy.
