Sky Sports pundit names the two players Man United should sign
Paul Merson feels Man United should try and sign Toby Alderweireld and Kalidou Koulibaly this month
Paul Merson believes that Manchester United should try to sign Toby Alderweireld and Kalidou Koulibaly this month.
The Red Devils have enjoyed a fine start to life under interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the Norwegian was appointed as the successor to Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford last month.
Manchester United have won their first seven games in charge under Solskjaer and made it six wins from six in the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Brighton on Saturday.
Those results have left Manchester United firmly back in contention for a top-four finish this season as Solskjaer looks to try and steer the Red Devils to Champions League qualification.
Manchester United are yet to make any new signings this month, despite there being only around a week left of the January transfer window.
And former Arsenal star Merson believes that the Red Devils should look to bring in some significant reinforcements in defence ahead of the second part of the season.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson said: “Defensively they are not good enough. I dread to think what the score will be against PSG in the Champions League next month. They need defenders.
“If it were not for bad finishing by Tottenham then it could have been any score.
“Toby Alderweireld and Kalidou Koulibaly are two players United should be targeting. Those two are the best two centre-backs in the world, along with Thiago Silva.
“Alderweireld probably could be purchased at a reasonable price, too. It would be a smart move especially as it would weaken Tottenham immensely.”
Manchester United will return to FA Cup action on Friday night when they travel to Arsenal in the fourth round.
They will then host Burnley at Old Trafford in the Premier League at the end of the month.
