Jesse Lingard urges 28-year-old to commit to Man United
The Man United star is hoping that David De Gea will extend his stay at Old Trafford beyond 2020
Jesse Lingard has urged David De Gea to commit his long-term future to Manchester United after the goalkeeper’s heroics in Sunday’s 1-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur.
The Spain international had to be at his best to help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to win his sixth successive game in all competitions since taking over the reins at Old Trafford.
Marcus Rashford broke the deadlock in the 44th minute after the England international produced a clinical finish following Paul Pogba’s world-class pass.
The Red Devils were put under pressure in the second half but Spurs were unable to find a way past De Gea after the Spanish goalkeeper made 11 saves.
Manchester United moved level on 41 points with Arsenal in the race to finish in the top four but Solskjaer’s side are still six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea FC.
De Gea’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the 2019-20 season after the former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper put pen to paper on a new deal in September 2015.
The Manchester United number one’s team-mate Lingard has revealed that the Red Devils squad is hoping that De Gea will commit his long-term future at Old Trafford.
“He’s one of the best keepers in the world, if not the best,” Lingard is quoted as saying by Metro.
“We want him to stay. Having a keeper like that gives you extra confidence. He’s a great goalkeeper.”
Manchester United will take on Brighton in their next Premier League fixture at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
