Michael Owen reveals his prediction for Ajax v Real Madrid
Michael Owen looks ahead to Real Madrid's trip to Ajax in the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday night
Michael Owen says he is expecting an open game between Ajax and Real Madrid in the Champions League showdown in Amsterdam on Wednesday night.
The Spanish giants are preparing to travel to the Netherlands to take on Ajax in the first leg of their last-16 clash.
Real Madrid have been in superb form in recent weeks but they are still behind FC Barcelona in the La Liga table, trailing the leaders by six points after 23 games.
The La Liga side have won their last five games in the league, while Ajax have only won two of their last five outings to leave them second in the Dutch league and trailing leaders PSV Eindhoven by six points.
Former Liverpool FC and Real Madrid star Owen believes that the stage is set for an open game on Wednesday night between the two sides.
Writing in his column for BetVictor, Owen said: “Ajax have lost their last six games against Real Madrid in all competitions, but the hosts have only lost one of their last 21 home European ties and won five out of six this season including qualifiers.
“Real Madrid have picked up positive results at Barcelona in the Spanish Cup and at neighbours Atletico in La Liga during the last week and look to be coming into peak form for the start of the knockout stages.
“Ajax have lost two of their last three domestically, but they do score goals and I would be surprised if both sides don’t find the back of the net in what promises to be an open, entertaining tie at the Johan Cruyff Arena.”
Real Madrid will return to La Liga action on Sunday when their travel to Girona before taking on Levante the following weekend.
They will then host FC Barcelona in the return leg of their Copa del Rey clash at the Bernabeu on Wednesday 27 February.
