Unai Emery sends direct message to Mesut Ozil about Arsenal future
The Arsenal manager says it is up to Mesut Ozil to win back his place in the Gunners team
Unai Emery says Mesut Ozil holds the “key” to winning back his place in the Arsenal team.
The Gunners midfielder was criticised by his former manager Arsene Wenger for being in the “comfort zone” at the north London side earlier this week.
Ozil has struggled to hold down a regular starting spot in the Arsenal team since Emery took over the reins from Wenger last summer.
The World Cup winner has been limited to 13 starts in a frustrating Premier League campaign for the former Germany international.
Ozil hasn’t featured for the Gunners since a 2-1 win over Cardiff City at The Emirates at the end of January.
The Arsenal number 10 has sat out most of Arsenal’s biggest games this season despite becoming their best paid player in history last year.
Asked about Ozil’s future at his media conference on Wednesday, Emery explained what Ozil needs to do to win back his starting spot:
“The key is in his hands. He is working very well this week. I ask him in our conversation for consistency, to be available for us for training, when you can train consistently you can help us with your best performance in the games.
“This week has been good for all the players. I am looking at him doing the training like we want.
“He needs to be available consistently for training, without the injuries, without the sickness. Without that we cannot see the best Mesut with us.”
Arsenal signed Ozil in what was a club record £42.5m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in the 2013 summer transfer window.
The north London side have won three FA Cup titles since Ozil arrived but the German star hasn’t been able to fire them to Premier League title glory.
The Gunners are in fifth place in the Premier League table.
