Granit Xhaka believes that Mesut Ozil has shown how important he is to Arsenal recently.

The Gunners playmaker’s situation has been a source of much debate in recent weeks due to his lack of first-team action under Unai Emery this season.

Ozil has struggled with form and fitness issues this season and Emery has not been afraid to leave the 30-year-old German out of the starting line-up on multiple occasions this season.

Indeed, Ozil had only made 14 Premier League appearances for Arsenal before Sunday’s clash with Southampton at The Emirates.

However, despite the controversial situation involving Ozil this season, Xhaka believes that the former Real Madrid star is still clearly an important part of the Arsenal squad.

Speaking in an interview quoted by the Daily Express, Xhaka said: “You can see Mesut is important for us. We are happy he is back.

“He was a little bit injured and a little bit sick but he is now 100 per cent back. He has good eyes, a good left foot. You can see when he is on the pitch, he can help us a lot.

“We now have important weeks, with Southampton and Bournemouth at home and Tottenham away. And we have the European games as well as Manchester United. It’s a period where you can see where we are going to be.

“I hope that Mesut can be key for us and that we can keep this run going for the next few months as we go for the top four.”

Ozil will be hoping to feature for Arsenal when the Gunners return to Premier League action on Wednesday night with a home clash against Bournemouth.

The north London side will then take on Tottenham at Wembley on Saturday lunchtime in the top flight as they look to keep up their push for a top-four finish in the Premier League this season.
