Arsenal are surprise contenders to sign Ajax defender Matthijs De Ligt this summer, according to reports
Arsenal have emerged as surprise contenders to sign Ajax defender Matthijs De Ligt this summer, according to reports in the British media.
The Sun is reporting that the north London side are keen in a deal to bring the 19-year-old to The Emirates this summer ahead of Unai Emery’s second season in charge at the club.
According to the same story, De Ligt is a “huge admirer” of the north London club and he has worked with Dutch legends Dennis Bergkamp and Marc Overmars.
However, the same article says that Arsenal will have to qualify for the Champions League and offload Mesut Ozil to be able to meet Ajax’s £70m valuation of De Ligt.
The story also says that Emery will only have £40m to spend this summer if the Gunners fail to qualify for the Champions League next season.
The same article also credits both Manchester City and Liverpool FC with an interest in signing De Ligt this summer.
The Ajax defender has been in top form this season, scoring two goals and making one assist in 20 Dutch league appearances.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are currently preparing for the return leg of their Europa League clash against BATE Borisov on Thursday night after losing the first leg of the last 32 clash 1-0 last week.
