Gary Neville urges Arsenal to back Unai Emery in summer transfer window
The Man United legend believes Arsenal need to support their manager in the summer transfer window
Gary Neville believes Unai Emery needs Arsenal to make important additions to his squad in the summer.
The Gunners lost 3-1 to defending Premier League champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday to lose ground in the top-four race.
Arsenal managed to cancel out Sergio Aguero’s early goal when Laurent Koscielny bundled the ball over the line from a set-piece.
However, the north London side struggled defensively and the Argentina international restored the home side’s lead before Aguero completed his hat-trick.
While the Gunners have thrilled with some of their exciting attacking performances, Emery needs to address some problems at the back after conceding 36 goals in 25 games.
Arsenal have managed to secure some significant victories in the Premier League this season, including a 4-2 home win over Tottenham and a 2-0 victory over Chelsea FC at The Emirates.
Emery added FC Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez to their squad on loan for the remainder of the season in the January transfer window.
Former Manchester United defender Neville warned Arsenal that the Gunners manager needs to be backed in the summer.
“Unai Emery is doing the best job that he possibly could do,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“This first season for him is all about working out which players are going to be on the ship next season and testing out different things.
“He’s finding out a lot about his players all the time. For instance, Matteo Guendouzi was fantastic against Manchester City. He’s 19-years-old and that was a really good performance. Emery can build around things like that.
“Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is always a threat but with the rest of the team there’s a lot to work on.”
“It’s a squad that needs additions and it needs change. He needs to sail that ship into shore, some need to disembark and the ones that he wants to get back on need to sail back out to sea with him.”
Neville added that Emery needs time to implement his ideas at The Emirates.
“It does need some change, but he will need time,” Neville added.
“He might even need all next season as well. We shouldn’t really be rushing Unai Emery and Arsenal in respect of what he’s trying to achieve at the club.”
Arsenal are in sixth place in the Premier League table and three points adrift of the top four.
However, the Gunners will have the chance to move level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea FC when Arsenal take on Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
