Mark Lawrenson states his prediction for Arsenal v Southampton
The BBC Sport pundit is backing Arsenal to ease to victory over the relegation candidates at The Emirates on Sunday
Mark Lawrenson is tipping Arsenal to ease to a comfortable 2-0 win over Southampton at The Emirates on Sunday.
Unai Emery’s side will be hoping to build upon their 2-1 victory over Huddersfield Town in their last Premier League fixture.
The Gunners have lost two of their last six Premier League games to falter in the top-four race over the past month or so.
The north London outfit have suffered defeats by West Ham United and Manchester City to allow Manchester United to hoist themselves above Arsenal into fourth place.
However, Emery’s side can move ahead of Manchester United into the final Champions League spot for a couple of hours ahead of the Red Devils’ clash against Liverpool FC at Old Trafford.
Southampton have only lost one of their last six Premier League games, but the Saints have also drawn three times during that run.
Former Liverpool FC defender Lawrenson is backing Arsenal to ease to a comfortable victory over the Saints on Sunday lunchtime.
“Southampton dropped into the relegation zone after losing to Cardiff last time out, and I think they might stay there for a while longer,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
“Arsenal have got some issues they need to sort out – Mesut Ozil’s future being one of them – but their home record is very good and they should still be too strong for Saints.”
Arsenal will start the Premier League weekend in fifth place and a point adrift of Manchester United in the race to secure a top-four finish.
The Gunners lost 3-1 to Manchester United in the FA Cup fourth round at The Emirates last month.
