Michael Owen is tipping Atletico Madrid to secure a narrow first-leg win against Juventus in their Champions League last-16 clash on Wednesday night.

Diego Simeone’s side will take on the Serie A title holders in what is the pick of the round of 16 fixtures.

Atletico and Juventus have a rich history in the Champions League over the past five seasons, having both reached the final on two occasions.

The Italian club are desperate to cap their Serie A dominance with a Champions League crown after losses to FC Barcelona and Real Madrid in 2015 and 2017.

Atletico, on the other hand, have lost Champions League finals to their bitter rivals Real Madrid in 2014 and 2016.

The Rojiblancos have a mixed record in two-legged knockout ties against Italian clubs having won four times and lost four ties.

Juventus have been in impressive form on the road in the Champions League this season after victories at Manchester United and Valencia in the group stage.

The Serie A giants recruited five-time Champions League winner Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid to bolster their European prospects this term.

Former Liverpool FC striker Owen is tipping Atletico to secure a first-leg win by a narrow margin on Wednesday night.

“Atletico Madrid are unbeaten in their last 12 home Champions League knock-out ties and have only conceded once in the last ten,” Owen told BetVictor.

“Juventus, however, have a proud recent away record winning four of their last five knockout ties on the road (D1) and this promises to be a tight, close affair with goals at a premium.

“Atleti would love to keep a clean sheet whilst Juve would love to take an away goal back to Turin. I think the hosts will edge it.”

The Rojiblancos have reached two Champions League and three Europa League finals in the last nine seasons.
