Paul Merson states his prediction for Burnley v Tottenham
The Arsenal legend is tipping Tottenham to beat Burnley on Saturday afternoon to put pressure on Man City and Liverpool FC
Paul Merson is tipping Tottenham Hotspur to put pressure on Liverpool FC by beating Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon.
Spurs will start the weekend in third place and five points adrift of Premier League leaders Manchester City and Liverpool FC.
The Lilywhites have won their last four Premier League games against Leicester, Newcastle, Watford and Fulham to build some momentum.
Tottenham can move to within two points of Liverpool FC ahead of the Merseyside outfit’s clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side have a 100 per cent record this season against sides currently outside the top eight.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson is backing Tottenham to beat Burnley to put pressure on the top two.
“Tottenham could get back in the title race if they win this game and Liverpool don’t beat Manchester United,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“If Liverpool beat United, then I don’t think Spurs are in it – I think it’s too many points – but if they win this and Liverpool don’t win, then they are in it because they still have to play Liverpool.
“I don’t think Burnley will go down. They have enough know-how, they are on a good run and they are hard to beat. However, I fancy Spurs to win this game.”
Burnley are without a win in their last nine games against Spurs, which makes the north London side clear favourites at Turf Moor.
Not only that, but Spurs have kept three successive clean sheets in their last three visits to Burnley.
Sean Dyche’s men have made a decent start to 2019 so far and Burnley are one of just two Premier League clubs unbeaten in the calendar year.
Tottenham have finished in the top four in three of the last four seasons under their Argentinian head coach since his appointment in 2014.
