Alan Shearer sends message to Marcus Rashford after Man United’s 2-0 win at Chelsea FC
Alan Shearer praises Marcus Rashford for his performance during Man United's 2-0 win at Chelsea FC in the FA Cup
Alan Shearer singled out Marcus Rashford for special praise after his “unbelievable” cross helped Manchester United to claim a 2-0 win at Chelsea FC in the FA Cup fifth round on Monday night.
Rashford has been in top form under interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and he continued his fine displays with a solid performance at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.
Manchester United took the lead in the 31st minute when Ander Herrera headed in Paul Pogba’s superb cross.
And the Red Devils made it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time when Rashford’s brilliant whipped cross was met by Pogba, who headed home and made it 2-0 at the break.
Rashford was one of Manchester United’s standout players on Monday night, and former England star Shearer was particularly impressed by the 21-year-old’s display.
Speaking to BBC Sport about Pogba’s goal, Shearer said: “The cross from Marcus Rashford [for the second goal] is unbelievable.
“He just puts it into that danger area and says get on the end of that. Look at the whip and pace of that ball in.
“It’s a wonderful header but it’s terrible defending from Chelsea all over the park. But again, from United’s point of view, it was a wonderful goal.”
Shearer also pointed the finger at Chelsea FC midfielder Jorginho for his defending in the lead-up to Manchester United’s opening goal.
He said: “It’s a brilliant goal from a Manchester United perspective.
“Jorginho is a good passer of the ball and when Chelsea have the ball, he’s a positive. When they don’t have the ball, he’s a negative, because he doesn’t smell danger.
“If N’Golo Kante plays in that position, Juan Mata would not have got that ball because he can smell danger and he gets around the pitch much better than Jorginho does.
“A positive when Chelsea have the ball, but Jorginho is a huge negative, for me, when they don’t have the ball – because he doesn’t do enough when they’re defending.”
On United’s overall performance, he added: “They had to defend very well in the second half. They worked really well as a team and I was so impressed with them.”
Rashford will be hoping to feature for Manchester United when the Red Devils take on Liverpool FC in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils are in fourth place as they chase Champions League qualification this season.
