Maurizio Sarri gives latest Chelsea FC update on Callum Hudson-Odoi
Maurizio Sarri has his say on Callum Hudson-Odoi's situation at Chelsea FC as things stand
Maurizio Sarri praised Callum Hudson-Odoi for his performance during Chelsea FC’s 3-0 win over Malmo in the Europa League on Thursday night.
The 18-year-old was in fine form as he played the full 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge and score Chelsea FC’s third goal as they comfortably booked their place in the last 16 of Europe’s second tier club competition.
Hudson-Odoi’s situation at Chelsea FC has been a constant source of speculation in recent weeks after Bayern Munich were heavily linked with a move to sign him in January.
However, a move failed to materialise and he has struggled to break into the first team under Sarri.
Hudson-Odoi was handed a rare start on Thursday night and he impressed as he found the net alongside Olivier Giroud and Ross Barkley.
And Sarri was pleased with Hudson-Odoi’s contribution as Chelsea FC booked their place in the last 16 with a comfortable win.
Speaking at his post-match news conference on Thursday night, Sarri said: “He played very well but I also think Christensen and Emerson played very well so I’m very happy with those three players. At the moment they are ready to play with consistency.
“You need to understand in the same position we have Pedro, Willian and Hazard, so it’s not easy for a young player to play with consistency like his team mates.
“I want to remind you Callum has played 14 matches [this season]. We are using him in the right way. Twenty matches will become 30 next year, and then 40 the year after.
“But the club has to decide because if I want Callum on the pitch with consistency then I have to sell another winger, otherwise the club is in trouble.”
Chelsea FC will now switch their attentions towards their League Cup final showdown against Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.
The Blues are currently in sixth place in the Premier League as they chase Champions League qualification.
