The Blues made a strong start to the season under Sarri following his appointment as Antonio Conte’s successor at Stamford Bridge last summer.
However, their form has dipped somewhat in recent weeks and the Blues have only managed to win two of their last five games in the Premier League.
The west London side are currently preparing to take on Manchester City in their Premier League showdown at The Etihad on Sunday afternoon and they find themselves 12 points behind Pep Guardiola’s men in the table.
And Sarri has now dismissed the notion that the Blues could be set to challenge for the title this season, instead admitting that Champions League qualification is now the club’s main priority.
Speaking at a news conference at Cobham on Friday afternoon, Sarri replied when asked if his side are title contenders: “I don’t think so, not at the moment.
“We will be able to fight for the top four this season, no more. We can win something of course, but in the Premier League there is a fight between Liverpool and Man City. In my opinion, Man City are the best team in Europe. They are an example for every club.
“We need to work. Guardiola is in the third season in the Premier League, Klopp in the fourth or fifth, but we need to work. I don’t know another way.
“We need only to work and try to reduce the gap.”
Chelsea FC have lost two of their last three games in the top flight, including a surprise 4-0 defeat by Bournemouth.
The west London side ended up in fifth place in the Premier League table last season under Conte.
