Mark Lawrenson states his prediction for Chelsea FC v Tottenham
The Liverpool FC legend is backing Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur to share the spoils at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night
Mark Lawrenson is backing Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur to play out a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
The Blues will be looking to avoid a Carabao Cup hangover after Chelsea FC lost to Manchester City on penalties at Wembley at the weekend.
The world’s most expensive goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga seemingly refused to be substituted in the final minutes of extra-time.
The Spanish shot-stopper managed to save one penalty but Sergio Aguero, Ilkay Gundogan, Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva all dispatched their efforts.
Tottenham suffered a setback in their title ambitions on Saturday after Mauricio Pochettino’s side slumped to a 2-1 loss to Burnley at Turf Moor.
Harry Kane returned from injury to cancel out Burnley’s opening goal before the home side netted a second-half winner thanks to Ashley Barnes.
Former Liverpool FC defender Lawrenson believes Chelsea FC and Tottenham will have to settle for a point each in the London derby on Wednesday night.
“I had predicted a draw, knowing that Harry Kane was coming back,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
“Part of my thinking was that, when a team’s best player is out, you get a little bit extra from all the other players. When he returns, they relax a tiny bit.
“It is going to take time for Kane to get back to his best but Spurs are on a tough run. They have got the north London derby against Arsenal coming up at the weekend too.”
Chelsea FC are in sixth place in the Premier League and three points adrift of Arsenal, who occupy the final Champions League qualification spot.
Maurizio Sarri’s side are facing a battle to secure a return to the Champions League after Antonio Conte led the Blues to a fifth-spot finish last term.
