Unai Emery gives latest Arsenal injury update ahead of Arsenal v Southampton
Unai Emery gives the latest update on Laurent Koscielny's fitness levels after he was forced off in Arsenal v BATE
Unai Emery has given an update about Laurent Koscielny’s fitness levels after he was forced off early in the second half of Arsenal’s 3-0 win over BATE Borisov in the Europa League on Thursday night.
The Gunners defender has been working his way back into the first team this season after suffering a serious Achilles injury last season that kept him out for a number of months.
Koscielny is one of Arsenal’s most experienced defenders and he could play a key role for Emery’s men between now and the end of the season.
The 33-year-old has scored two goals in eight Premier League games so far this season and has been a solid performer at the back when called upon.
Speaking at his post-match news conference on Thursday night, Emery revealed that he is hoping that Koscielny’s latest setback will not be a serious one.
Emery said: “I think it’s precaution and we are going to wait for tomorrow.
“But, I hope he will be OK for Sunday and for the next week. It’s muscular, it’s not a break. But it was only precaution because he was starting to feel not good.
“I think it [his Achilles] is not broken. I think it’s only a precaution because he didn’t feel good and with the possibility that maybe if he carried on in the match, it could break.”
Arsenal are now preparing for their Premier League clash against Southampton at The Emirates on Sunday afternoon.
The north London side are in fifth place in the Premier League table as they seek Champions League qualification after having missed out on a top-four finish for the last two seasons running.
