Rio Ferdinand sends message to Liverpool FC, Man City about title race
The Man United legend believes Liverpool FC and Man City need to concentrate on just winning rather than the level of performance
Rio Ferdinand believes the Premier League title race is still “open” after Liverpool FC failed to seize their chance to move seven points clear of Manchester City on Wednesday night.
Jurgen Klopp’s side were presented with the opportunity to increase their advantage over Manchester City after the defending champions squandered an early lead to lose 2-1 to Newcastle United on Tuesday night.
The Reds looked to be on course for a resounding win when it took their Senegal international Sadio Mane just three minutes to make the breakthrough against Leicester City at Anfield.
However, the Premier League leaders couldn’t convert a number of opportunities to double their lead and Leicester punished the home side in added time at the end of the first half.
Harry Maguire managed to escape the attention of Virgil van Dijk and produced a composed finish past Alisson Becker to equalise.
Liverpool FC’s 1-1 stalemate with Leicester extended their lead to five points at the top of the Premier League.
But Klopp’s squad will be frustrated not to have given themselves more of a cushion with trips to Goodison Park and Old Trafford to come, as well as home clashes against Chelsea FC and Tottenham.
Asked about the title race following Liverpool FC’s 1-1 draw with Leicester on Wednesday night, Ferdinand told BT Sport:
“It is still open. It’s only five points. Man City will be sitting there breathing a sigh of relief. Liverpool gained a point but will they be sitting there thinking they should have taken three.
“The mental side of the game is the most important thing at this side of the season. It’s not about the performance. Get your points.”
