Jamie Carragher says Liverpool FC need to respond to Manchester City’s recent form with a key winning run.

Manchester City suffered a surprise 2-1 loss to Newcastle United at St James’ Park at the end of January.

However, Pep Guardiola’s men wasted no time dusting themselves off to get their title challenge back on track.

Manchester City have since scored 11 times in three victories over Arsenal, Everton and Chelsea FC to reel in Liverpool FC at the top.

Indeed, the Citizens hoisted themselves into top spot thanks to a 6-0 victory over Maurizio Sarri’s side at The Etihad on Sunday.

Liverpool FC squandered their chance to build a significant lead following successive stalemates with Leicester City and West Ham before Saturday’s 3-0 win over Bournemouth.

The Reds will return to Premier League action with a trip to Manchester United on Sunday 24 February.

Klopp’s side will follow that with a home clash against Watford before the short journey across Stanley Park to take on Everton.

Former Liverpool FC defender Carragher underlined the significant of those three fixtures in the context of the title race.

“You look at it now with regards to points totals and whoever does finish second, how unlucky are they going to be?” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“What City have done is they’ve got through their week where if you are Liverpool, you’re looking at it and it’s Arsenal and Chelsea – two big hitters – and Everton away, not an easy game.

“But they’ve got nine points – and now Liverpool have their big week where City will be thinking: ‘Man United away, Watford at home and Everton away.’

“What Liverpool have got to do is they’ve got to respond in that week. If they come out of that week and they’re still top, it’s a case of right back at you, City.”

Carragher was part of the Liverpool FC squad that finished in second place in 2002 and 2009 under Gerard Houllier and Rafael Benitez.

The talismanic defender watched on from the Sky Sports studio as Liverpool FC squandered their lead in the 2013-14 title race to miss out to Manchester City.
